My Allotment Project

I’m lucky enough to have an allotment on one of the most beautiful and historic sites in London.  Situated between the Georgian splendor of Richmond Green and a lovely stretch of the River Thames, the site is believed to lie on the former moat which surrounded the Old Richmond Palace.

The 33 plots are like a “secret garden” hidden behind a door in an ancient wall. Mine is Plot No. 11a which I’ve been tending for 25 years.

I’ve taken a few photos over that time, but mostly wildlife and close ups of flowers and veg.  Now I want to do something more in-depth, a documentary style project capturing the changing seasons and crops and hopefully also some of the different people who garden there.

I’m really looking forward to this project because it’s personal and something I feel passionate about and hopefully this will show through in my photos. I think working on projects can offer a more contemplative approach to photography when compared with the frenetic hunt for that single ‘wow’ shot.

I’m already feeling excited and energised by the prospect and hoping it will help develop me as a photographer.
